Unit One: The Five Themes of Geography

Theme1 Location

  • Where is it?
    • Asolute location (exactly)
      • Latitude and longitude (an address, or a grid)
    • Relative location
      • Next to, near, far from, etc.

Theme2 Place

  • What is it like there?
    • Physical features: land, water, soil, plants and animals (the natural environment).
    • Human features: activities, religion, language, culture

Theme3 Human & Environment Interaction

  • What is the relationship between people and their environment?
    • How do humans adapt to the environment?
    • How do humans modify the environment?
    • How do humans depend on the environment?

Theme4 Movement

  • How are people and place connected?
    • Why people move?
    • What is the course of movement taken by people, goods, ideas, and information?
    • How does this make us more interdependent?

Theme5 Regions

  • Areas of the world (See Unit Two)
    • Related by climate, i.e. Equatorial climate regions.
    • Related by region, i.e. East Asia.
    • Related by language, i.e. the English speaking world.
    • Formal regions - defined by political design, i.e. boundaries of a country or state; defined by geographers, i.e. Rocky Mountains.
    • Vernacular region, i.e. China proper, the American south, ASEAN member states.

Regions - All information and assignments that are teacher generated are included in the appropriate area below. (We only have time to examine three of the regions below. Note that Russia (just Russia) will be included with Europe). We will start with Europe & Russia, but the other two areas are your decision.
